I officially lost interest in this show when they introduced Surpentor. He was the Scrappy Doo of the G.I.Joe franchise and just such an unlikable character. Once they brought him in Cobra Commander became a joke. Every time he said "This...I command!" I wanted to reach through the screen and punch him in the face. -- Submitted By: (HulkFan) on October 22, 2018, 8:27 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote

The best thing about GI Joe were those crazy parody videos derived from the old series that were floating around the internet a few years ago. Anybody remember "Hey Kid! I'm a computah!" or "PORK CHOP SANDWICHES!!" -- Submitted By: (Friedrich_Feuerstein) on October 2, 2011, 12:43 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I've been marathoning G.I. Joe recently and thought I should leave my impressions of it. I know many fans dislike the second season due to Serpentor and Sgt. Slaughter. But there were some great new characters (like Hawk finally making his animated debut) and episodes (Sink the Montana). Even Serpentor got a great origin story (made from DNA of history's greatest tyrants). I wonder if Serpentor would have been received more warmly if he didn't have such a ridiculous costume and name that seemed like a He-Man reject. I think I'd have to agree with Dr. Sarcastor that The Movie was probably the boning point. The show was already straining credibility and that Cobra-La crap was just too much. Cobra Commander's ridiculous origin from The Movie of being a mutated nobleman-scientist of an ancient race of lizard-men from the Himalayas made his comic book origin of being a disgruntled used-car salesman look believable. The less said about the post-Movie episodes done by DiC, the better. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on October 1, 2011, 2:32 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Travoltron- JUST FINALLY check out GI JOE RESOLUTE. Wow, it was the GI joe cartoon we all wanted to see as kids. 5 named characters dead, hundreds of Cobra Blue shirts killed, well animated and just kick ass. If you liked GI JOE- get GI JOE Resolute today. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on April 27, 2011, 7:34 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
While I really want to vote for "Nobody Dies" (even as a kid I knew no one's reflexes and parachutes were that good) I really feel like the death of all our beloved childhood cartoons came with "The Movie." If I ever saw a "The Movie" version of anything when I was younger I always knew my favorite characters were either going to be killed or raped into a new character for me to buy a new toy of and they would never be the same (DAMN YOU GOLD BUG!!!). Don't get me wrong, a lot of the movies were great but it usually signaled the end of the TV shows and if it didn't, it really should have. BTW, great point Travlotron, Resolute is awesome! Just don't be a character with a mustache in this movie; you might as well have a red shirt on. -- Submitted By: (dr_sarcastor) on August 28, 2010, 10:53 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
You might want to check out the 2009 cartoon, G.I. Joe: Resolute. It's about an hour long and they purposely broke all the "no killing" rule. I think their tagline was, "No lasers, no parachutes, just all out action." http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002NXSRWK/hokutorenkito-20 -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on May 5, 2010, 2:54 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
The new IDW comic "GI JOE" is outstanding, check it out if you want to see a good modernized version of this classic property, unlike the crap movie from last summer. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on May 3, 2010, 7:24 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
BTW does anyone else here besides me know they came out with a new GI Joe comic? I don't know if it's still ongoing, but it's the only GI Joe media I know of where some of the Joes actually get killed, and not the "heroic death in a blaze of glory" way either. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on May 3, 2010, 2:34 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Boned with Serpentor. Cobra Commander rocked! -- Submitted By: (MCS) on April 25, 2010, 9:29 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
While it was very unrealistic that no one ever died (and I seem to remember another cliche being Cobra shooting down the Joes planes and the pilots *always* were able to eject and parachute to safety) it was part of the charm of the show. It's ironic however that people say that it being a kid's show should keep them being having characters dying. I admit that I tend to feel the same way. However, in reality, it's the adults that character deaths and violence tend to bother more. Though having *someone* die even as a special episode could have been interesting, it could also have opened a Pandora's box when all of the sudden characters were dying all of the time like Redshirts. Seriously though, even though the show was basically a commercial for the toys, it was still a fun show and one I enjoyed as a kid. It may seem silly now, but I think a lot of kids enjoyed it back then and I think that's what matters. -- Submitted By: (ExplodingConsole) on July 26, 2009, 10:33 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Haha, you go Chubbyrain!!! I thought it was cheesy for the same reasons. It's a good thing we don't have soldiers like the Joes defending America for real with that lack of marksmanship or colossal waste of millions of dollars in weaponry. And the Cobras made the Joes look competant! There was actually more hand to hand violence since nobody on either side could hit someone by any other means. On the Serpentor thing, remember that Cobra actually went out of their way to collect DNA from every great military leader in world history to "make" him. What did they expect, that he'd just meekly fall in line like all their other mooks? And Cobra Commander was actually in CHARGE of this! He deserved to lose his job if you ask me! But despite all of this, the actual BTF moment didn't occur until...the movie. GOD that was horrible. After that all the accumulated cheesiness just couldn't be ignored by me any longer. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on July 10, 2009, 6:17 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I had forgotten how idiotic Serpentor was- he looked like a pro wrester and had a bad accent- how could COBRA ever give this guy the top job over Cobra Commander? Scandalous! -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on April 1, 2009, 9:17 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
It's stupid to have all the guns and tanks and missles, and nobody gets hurt- it's bad for kids to see that kind of thing with no consequence. Of course I just wanted to see some of the annoying characters (Scarlet!!) get wasted. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on March 19, 2009, 4:54 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Wanted people to die??? This was for kids, right? -- Submitted By: (rick283) on March 18, 2009, 10:26 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Seriously after a while, you wanted SOMEONE to die- ANYONE!!! How could you have so many guns and vehicles and missles, and nobody DIES??? It really ruined the whole concept of an army fighting terrorists. At least Cobra Commander was cool. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on March 18, 2009, 5:32 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
