Random Topics - Radio
Radio is the transmission of signals by modulation of electromagnetic waves with frequencies below those of visible light. Electromagnetic radiation travels by means of oscillating electromagnetic fields that pass through the air and the vacuum of space. Information is carried by systematically changing (modulating) some property of the radiated waves, such as amplitude, frequency, or phase. When radio waves pass an electrical conductor, the oscillating fields induce an alternating current in the conductor. This can be detected and transformed into sound or other signals that carry information.

With programs like Spotify, You Tube, and MOG (among others) I have absolutely no use for conventional radio. Which is a good thing because companies like Clear Channel and Three Eagles (a smaller, regional version of Clear Channel) have destroyed the industry. -- Submitted By: (Asham1046) on May 8, 2013, 7:12 pm - (0 votes)

If you're too cheap for satellite radio, and disgusted with free FM/AM radio like I am, you can always use a portable media player (like an ipod), connect it to the AUX or output hole on your car radio (if it has one) or home system, and listen to it through your speakers.. -- Submitted By: () on November 2, 2011, 3:05 pm - (0 votes)

There's nothing special or unique about radio anymore. It used to be that every city had their own shows or personalities, but now with huge conglomerations owning multiple stations, the local flavor is largely gone. In favor there is the illusion that it's local, when it's really produced in New York or Los Angeles. Add to that all stations play about five songs an hour plus tons of commercials and stations have a playlist of about ten songs total and you have many reasons why now I just take my iPod and used that for my music these days. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on May 31, 2011, 9:04 pm - (1 votes)

The only time I listen to the radio is when I drive. Otherwise, I can easily live without it. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on May 31, 2011, 2:48 pm - (0 votes)

Commercial radio is good for call-in talk shows and little else. And public radio is not much better. The proliferation of podcasts, of every conceivable variety, and create-your-own-music-station services, pretty much makes conventional radio a quaint anachronism. -- Submitted By: (Soggy9000) on May 31, 2011, 11:59 am - (1 votes)

For me, radio became "indecent" around 1991 or so. Long live pre-1990 songs (with the 80's as my absolute favorite)! -- Submitted By: (SVN) on August 28, 2009, 6:36 pm - (1 votes)

Radio BTF in 2000-2003, when current music simply wasn't decent anymore. -- Submitted By: (Indigo) on July 16, 2009, 3:51 pm - (0 votes)

With radio, music was able to reach a much larger audience in a much shorter time than ever before- even with phonograph records alone! In fact, for a time, artists who recorded on phonograph records weren't permitted to ALSO perform on radio. I admit there are only a few stations I like in my city, but I enjoy listening to them so I can hear some song I'd forgotten I'd liked back in the day! -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on July 10, 2009, 1:55 pm - (0 votes)

Radio is obsolete. The problem is, the listener has no choice of what song to hear at any given time. Downloading gave them that choice, and I see no real reason to listen to talk radio either since it's just a bunch of guys screaming or saying the same thing everyone else already is. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on July 8, 2009, 12:30 pm - (2 votes)

Before I purchased my new truck, all I had was FM. I was forced to listen to public radio because the rest was just horrible. After my new XM setup, I won't ever go back. It seems like so much time wasted before just trying to find something decent on FM, no longer. Joe I think you should try XM for a month or so, you'll be hooked. -- Submitted By: (Hikariu) on May 12, 2009, 7:00 am - (0 votes)

Joebag- I thought the same thing (why pay for radio), until the format of my favorite FM station was changed from rock to country for no reason in 2006, then I got Sirius out of protest because I was mad at the FM stations in general in my area. It was the best thing that ever happened to me with audio entertainment. Satellite radio is about 1000x better than FM ever was. Now the funny thing is, my car was out for about 3 days after I had satellite for about a year for a body work issue so I had a car without satellite for three days, and having to go back to the regular FM stations was literally torture because it was just that damn lousy to the awesome radio I had become used to. I have never met anyone that has had Satellite radio that says it isnt worth every penny, the only people that say it isnt worth it, dont have it, and normally have never even listened to it. Expand your mind Joe, and try it out, you'll love it! -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on May 12, 2009, 5:03 am - (2 votes)

Sorry but regular radio rocks the house. The closest it gets to boning a fish is when a song comes on by Country Joe and the Fish. Where else can you get informative news shows and a pretty decent variety of music without having to join something. I don't have Sirus or XM and I'm sure they are fantastic but you do have to pay for them. Good old fashioned AM and FM radio absolutely rocks -- Submitted By: (JoeBagODonuts) on May 11, 2009, 11:57 pm - (-2 votes)

Regular radio is un-listenable after you have had Sirius/XM satellite. It jumps the fish for each person after they get a taste of the good service and little to no commercials and real variety of ALL kinds of music on Satellite radio. Boned for me in 2006 when I went to SIRI. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on May 8, 2009, 3:26 pm - (0 votes)

I'd have to say the radio "boned the fish" just recently. I don't know if this applies where you live, but apparently there are too many commercials, and the stations seem to play just the same 10 songs over and over every day! Gee whiz, I hope Sirius XM or Internet radio prevails! -- Submitted By: (SVN) on May 8, 2009, 2:13 pm - (1 votes)
