They finally explained where Lyman was on the new CGI cartoon. He had been living in the jungle all this time protecting the animals from poachers. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on September 14, 2012, 1:35 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
@JayD - the feet changed size/shape sometime after the first Garfield special (Here Comes Garfield) aired. It was Charles Schulz's idea to make Garfield's feet bigger and Jim Davis ran with it (read about it in one of the Garfield anniversary books). -- Submitted By: (BigAl) on October 21, 2010, 1:34 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Ever notice in the more recent strips, his hind feet are almost as big as his body? How did they grow so big? I don't know about you, but I have always preferred Heathcliff. -- Submitted By: (JayD) on June 29, 2010, 10:42 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I agree with the people who voted for Liz and Jon dating as the reason. It's just too unbelievable even by newspaper comic standards. Dorks like Jon do NOT get dates like Liz in real life, EVER. Plus now I have to actually think about the two of them having sex which is just...awkward. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on June 17, 2010, 7:25 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Many reasons this one boned: 1.) Garfield went from fat, ugly cat (look at the 1st-3rd years of the strip) to cute. 2.) Garfield's attitude became nicer and nicer as the strip progressed. 3.) Jon went from average guy/cartoonist to complete dork and nerd. Lately they've made him more normal/average guy like again. 4.) The humor has been blunted considerably from the early days. 5.) Same old repetitive story lines (Garfield hates Mondays, Garfield loves lasagna, etc.) 6.)Characters have disappeared with no explanation (Lyman, Nermal, Arlene) I think that's enough for now. I actually think having Jon hook up with Liz was a good thing. It could lead to fresh new storylines for once. We'll see how it unfolds. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on June 14, 2010, 4:46 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
It's still decent, but as most of you said, it's not as good as the older strips. I think it could very well be on the verge of boning. -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on March 24, 2010, 11:24 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I hear ya AndyC. Garfield became too human and became more or less a boring version of Heathcliff. Unfortunately, the others changed for the worse. Odie used to be just a regular dog then he started to become somewhat anthromorphic and became dumber. Jon used to be just an average guy then he became an extremely weird nerd. It used to be Irma who would be weird until she disappears from the strip. Lyman, Odie's original owner, mysteriously disappeared from the strip to never be heard from again. Garfield's girlfriend also seems to have disappeared. I haven't seen Nermal in a long time so I'm assuming he too vanished. I wish it was good like the pre-late 80's version but it is not. -- Submitted By: (Acobjum) on March 23, 2010, 12:08 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
is it just me or were the earliest strips the funniest? -- Submitted By: (NanaOsakifan200) on January 25, 2010, 4:52 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I guess when Garfield went from being a hidden gem curmudgeonly cat-about-town who taunted Odie and prowled the streets to a lovable pop-culture icon who almost never left Jon's house! -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on September 27, 2009, 3:52 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Hard to pinpoint exactly where Garfield started heading downhill, but the cat's downfall had to be his mainstream success. Think about it. The original Garfield was a great lump of a cat with beady little eyes, a miserable disposition, and a propensity for violence and all manner of excess. The style was more raw and the humour had more of an edge. As Garfield gained popularity, he started moving more toward the middle of the road, and eventually became the lovable tabby who can be grouchy at times. And this is reflected in the drawing style. You can measure the decline in Garfield's own ever-cuter proportions, as his eyes get bigger and his body gets smaller, right up to the almost fully anthropomorphic Garfield walking on two legs, drinking coffee from a cup and practically carrying on conversations with Jon. Garfield started out as a very cool strip that presented a fat, grouchy cat who behaved like a cat, but thought in human terms. It was insightful, edgy and funny. Eventually, Garfield became just another cartoon character. The exact turning point is hard to pinpoint, but the cuteness really took over when the animated specials began in the 80s. By the time the Saturday morning cartoon came along, that fat, grouchy tabby was totally kid-friendly. -- Submitted By: (AndyC) on September 22, 2009, 6:24 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
