I love that recurring gag where the cannon fails to fire, Dobbs kicks one of the wheels (what is that supposed to DO?), which falls off as the cannon abruptly fires and knocks down the lookout tower as a hapless Trooper Vanderbilt (of course the most nearsighted guy in the fort is the lookout) jumps out at the last moment to avoid being crushed inside it. That and "IT IS BA-LLOOOOOOOOOONNNN!!!!!" -- Submitted By: (ParkerTillman) on September 13, 2012, 3:09 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I'm always amazed at the detailed critiques of a series that aired briefly nearly half a century ago. I certainly could not remember any changes in the quality of the writing from the first season to the second, or the change in caliber of the fort's cannon, or whatever. (45 years is a looonnnnnggg time to retain that sort of stuff in my head.) All I recall is a show I rather liked, despite its abject silliness. (Or because of it; again, the memory just isn't too sharp here.) I appreciated that the Indians were smarter than the cavalrymen, and I liked the cast. There was no boning moment I could name. -- Submitted By: (Soggy9000) on June 10, 2011, 8:02 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
For me, Season One was so bad it was good. But in Season Two, too many episodes were so bad it wasn't funny. Color got the vote, even though that's not likely the reason, unless the need to work with color distracted the production team. Something happened with the writers over the summer between Season One and Season Two. -- Submitted By: (hamjor) on April 26, 2010, 8:24 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I'm a massive fan of 60's tv - Bewitched,Get Smart et al - but this one is painfully unfunny & stupid with ordinary actors and lame writing. -- Submitted By: (ChuckC) on March 4, 2010, 7:03 am - (-2 votes) - Login to Vote
I like sexual tension in a comedy but, much like the I dream Of Jeanie series, it always frustrates me to see a beautiful girl chasing some idiot that shows no interest in them at all. That don't happen in real life, especially when both parties are single. -- Submitted By: (fletch000) on February 10, 2010, 1:07 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
One of several historical military comedies of the 1960s (along with "Hogan's Heroes" and "McHale's Navy"), this featured Ken Berry ("Mayberry RFD," "Mama's Family") as Capt. Wilton Parmenter; Forrest Tucker ("Auntie Mame") as Sgt. O'Rourke and Larry Storch as Cpl. Agarn, all serving with other bumbling calvarymen at Fort Courage in the Kansas Territory. Supporting soldiers included veteran silent era cowboy actor Bob Steele as Duffy ("There I was with Davy Crockett at the Alamo") and James Hampton as buglar Dobbs (he later starred in films like "The Longest Yard" and "The China Syndrome"). There was also a love interest for Parmenter, Wrangler Jane (Melody Patterson) and a local indian tribe, the Hekawis, led by white actor Frank DeKova ("Teenage Caveman" for you MiSTies out there). Only on two years, the series never really had time to bone anything, and I always enjoyed it in reruns after I came home from school in the mid-1970s. -- Submitted By: (GregEichelberger) on July 15, 2009, 4:17 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
