Mr. Potato Head is a plastic toy modeled after a potato, who could be decorated with attachable body parts such as eyes, nose, ears, mouth, feet, arms, and a hat. It was invented and developed by George Lerner in 1949. Hasbro first manufactured and distributed it in 1952. The idea came from Lerner's idea to put funny faces on fruits and vegetables. As this idea was pitched during the time of food rationing, the idea was seen as wasteful, and the idea was rejected. Eventually, he was able to distribute the plastic parts, but parents had to supply the potato body. The kit included the plastic potato body in 1964. Many variations of Mr. Potato Head have been released, including his wife Mrs. Potato Head and Star-Wars themed Mr. Potato Heads (Darth Tater, R2DPotatoo). Mr. Potato Head was also featured in the Pixar movie Toy Story, voiced by Don Rickles.

1 Soggy, you're lucky you got to have one of those at all! *I* never got to play with one of those because my parents grew up in the Depression and, having seen breadlines and Dust Bowl dust raining down on the streets of his East Coast city, my father in particular couldn't abide the idea of wasting a perfectly good potato for a TOY! OK, they're now plastic but I honestly can't see the appeal of putting the odd ears, noses, etc. on a potato-shaped 'head'! I guess we should be lucky no one has marketted a 'Mr. Tofu Head'. -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on May 14, 2011, 3:33 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote

4 Dammit, when I was a kid, we didn't have all this fancy-schmancy stuff like "plastic"; Mr Potato Heads were made out of stone. (So were Hula Hoops and Frisbees and Easy Bake Ovens.) -- Submitted By: (Soggy9000) on May 13, 2011, 3:09 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
5 I had an old-school Mr. Potato Head when I was a wee lad - my parents didn't freak out over the plastic pipe in the set. Those who thought the plastic pipe encouraged smoking used their heads for keeping their ears apart. -- Submitted By: (BigAl) on November 12, 2010, 7:34 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
