This show was funny, very funny for the first few seasons. Then it got preachy. Julia was funny as a satirical character but when the show started taking her politics seriously, it started going downhill. I loved Delta Burke's Suzanne Sugarbaker! And the characters played by Jean Smart, Annie Potts, and Meshach Taylor. However they turned Anthony into a stereotypical Tom, he was very funny when he ridiculed the Sugarbakers to their faces and their liberal guilt allowed him to get away with it but after he became a money grubbing creep, like them, he got unfunny, quick! When Delta left the show, they should have wrapped it up. Instead they hired the insipid Julia Duffy who never fit in. Suzanne was the heart and soul of this show because she was 1: funny as hell! 2: had a huge heart and loved everyone and 3: all the characters loved her and their interactions just weren't the same after she left. -- Submitted By: (jmac9909) on May 14, 2013, 5:20 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Wow, now I feel sorry for Dixie: "[Dixie] Carter was a Republican, a rarity in liberal Hollywood. So she made a deal with [Designing Women]'s producers. For every liberal tirade she had to deliver, she'd get to sing a song in an upcoming episode." So they forced Dixie Carter to soapbox beliefs she was very opposed to (on a freakin' sitcom!) and they fired Delta Burke for gaining weight. Series creator (and buddy of the Clintons) Linda Bloodworth-Thomason ain't lookin' to good to me. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on September 13, 2012, 6:27 pm - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
Yeah, I agree. Next time Dixie Carter opens her mouth, someone stuff a sock in it. Unwatchable tripe, especially after that bottle blonde from Newhart replaced Delta. -- Submitted By: (ParkerTillman) on September 13, 2012, 2:48 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I saw one rerun a couple years ago where Dixie was extolling the virtues of Jimmy Carter's post-Presidential humanitarian work and condemning Ronald Reagan for doing so little after stepping down. Gee, you think maybe because the man was ill might have something to do with it? They really need to cut that scene (and any Dixie soapboxing scene, really) out of the syndication package. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on February 15, 2012, 11:09 am - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
Never enjoyed this show. I didn't find it particularly funny. Delta was definitely the highlight of the show. I recall Dixie Carter's long-winded preaching, and Jean Smart's ditziness, even Meshach Taylor's token appearances. Can't for the life of me remember anything Annie Potts' character did that was memorable. -- Submitted By: () on February 14, 2012, 8:13 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote

This was one of the funniest shows on television...EVER! When Delta Burke left, it just wasn't the same. It lacked that certain "southern charm" after Suzanne Sugarbaker was gone. -- Submitted By: (Stephanie) on October 16, 2009, 3:36 pm - (5 votes) - Login to Vote
