Mega Man is a franchise that began with the NES game released in 1987. It was about a robot boy, Rock, who was built by the robot scientist Dr. Light. Dr. Light and Dr. Wily worked together to create robots. Dr. Light earned acclaim as Dr. Wily was overshadowed, causing him to become increasinlgy jealous. One day, Dr. Wily turned against Dr. Light and reprogrammed the six robots Dr. Light built, and had them attack the city. Rock asked Dr. Light to redesign him as a fighting robot so he could stop them. A second game, Mega Man 2, was released for the NES. Dr. Wily, smarting from defeat, builds 8 of his own robots to stop Mega Man. As games progressed, more characters are introduced, including the robot dog Rush, the robot bird Beat, and Mega Man's brother, Proto Man. The franchise has led to spinoffs, including Mega Man X, which was first released for the SNES in 1994 and took place 30 years after the original series. Dr. Light locked X away in a capsule because he feared that the robot would wind up being destroyed or that he would pose a threat to humans. When he was discovered by Dr. Cain, the robot scientist built robots based on his design, but they wound up being affected by a virus that turned them into evil Mavericks (Irregulars in Japan). Mega Man Legends, which takes place over a thousand years since the first series, stars Mega Man as a teenage boy and is the first 3D Mega Man game. Mega Man Battle Network features Mega Man as a NetNavi, an artificial intelligence that lives in a world known as the Network. The Mega Man franchise also includes toys, a 1995 American television series produced by Ruby-Spears Productions, and manga (in Japan).

1 Mega Man is one of the best game series of all time. Mega Man Battle Network, when it was out, pushed the original Mega Man (as well as X and its spinoffs) into the back, but now it seems MMBN has died off (I hardly hear about it anymore). I think it's great that we can play new games, 8-bit style. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on March 14, 2011, 6:23 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
