TV Shows - Dragonball Z

With the ending of Dragon Ball, Toei Animation quickly released a second anime television series, Dragon Ball Z, commonly abbreviated DBZ. Picking up where the first left off, Dragon Ball Z is adapted from the final twenty-six volumes of the manga series. It premiered in Japan on Fuji Television on April 26, 1989, taking over its predecessor's time slot, and ran for 291 episodes until its conclusion on January 31, 1996.

The only reason DBZ had so much filler is because the show was being produced while Akira Toriyama was still writing the manga, so they had to drag it out. They eventually released a version called DBZ Kai, which cut out the filler and moved at the same pace as the manga. You were left with 2 or 3 "filler episodes" covered in just one. -- Submitted By: (KappaMan) on October 2, 2014, 8:12 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I just saw another DBZ dub by the AB Group aka "Big Green" dub on youtube, it was hilariously bad, it has bad grammar, Piccolo is called "Big Green" hench the dub's nickname, Tien's voice is messed up, too many words tries to fit in one scene which is the reason they seemly fast too fast, almost all the charcters are voiced by some old man, and every move is called Kamehameha even turning Super Saiyan, and that's not even the worst dub. The one dub is worst than Big Green and Speedy dub is the "Boys and Girls Club" dub. -- Submitted By: (SSM) on May 19, 2012, 1:05 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Goku had literally become more powerful than God at the very start of this show. Where do you go from there? Well, pull more villains out of your ass and say that this one is way more powerful than the last one! The filler was unbearable; fortunately with DVD you can just skip over a lot of that easily. That being said, I enjoyed it up until the "Saiyaman" saga ended. Then Toriyama totally dropped the ball after that. Gohan was built up to be this great hero throughout the entire Z series and then it never happens. Ridiculous gimmicks like Fusion, Super Saian 3, etc. Unbelievable villain Majin Buu, who was really just a weak ripoff of Piccolo Sr, right down to the genie motif. I noticed when they did the reedited "Kai" version recently they left out the Buu Saga. Probably for the best. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on May 17, 2011, 11:43 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I see what you mean, in that episode Frieza claim that planet Namek is gonna blow up in 5 minutes. That 5 minutes took 3 episodes. I kinda like Dragonball Z Kai because they have no fillers and have a better writing. -- Submitted By: (SSM) on February 25, 2011, 4:19 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
The early part (Goku traveling Snake Way, the battle against Nappa and Vegeta) wasn't bad. When the main villain was Frieza, they relied too much on filler. The Cell and Buu sagas dragged considerably, but not the point you'd hear "Will (character name)'s left or right eyebrow twitch? Find out next time on DRAGON BALL Z!" -- Submitted By: (BigAl) on February 25, 2011, 5:57 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Dragonball Z is one of those odd cult shows that nobody watched when it first came out (maybe because most stations stick it at odd times like at 7am when most kids were not up on Saturday mornings) but then they did reruns of the dub on Toonami and it became popular. It wasn't bad show in the beginning. The animation was top notch but many kids shows had great animaiton at the time during its Toonami run and they . When Funanimation realized they had a hit, they reduce the censorship on it and try to abit more faithful to the original Japanese. However there were problems which were dicussed in other posts. A single battle told 10 to 20 episodes to finish, and the same plot devices over and over again. My personal buffs were over the background scences and use of characters. Backgrounds seemed the same constantly. Green with lollipop trees and hills and green water and more green stuff. Everything green. Z fighters were almost useless and unused when through they were important characters in the Dragonball show. Toriyama should have them defeat some of the strong enemies once in awhile. It shouldn't that bad. Kurin of the Z fighters seemed like the only one who is non-Saiyan or Namek that could have hold his own even against some of the deadly enemies and he was relevant to the plot. However it became the Saiyan show with Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, Trucks and whatever thing Toriyama and others dreamed up to milk the cash cow. If Toriyama decided to off Goku without revive with the Frieza saga and end it, or focus on Gohan as main character, the show might have been better. -- Submitted By: (Ani) on May 7, 2010, 11:52 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
The show became an exercise in tedium, everything revolved around "power levels". Nothing else mattered... not place, environment, martial arts skill being used, none of that... just power levels. "I have a power level of 3 MILLION!" Oh yea? Well my power level is 3 million... AND ONE!!! "Oh no! U must be bluffing! I are dead then!" This eventually departed from all sense and reason. Getting a power level of 1 million turned you into some sort of golden heavenly God like warrior. Getting a power level of 2 million made you an even more impressive, more beautifully drawn, muscular God warrior, and so on with 3 million and 4 million and all that, getting you to another "level" of super saijin. Then... finally... you become SO POWERFUL... your power level is SO HIGH... that you turn back into a monkey like creature????????? WHAT?!?!? How do you go from Golden Glorious God to monkey again??? Is it like a car where if you drive too many miles it finally rolls back over to 0 and starts all over??? The series was canceled after that. I guess even die hard fans couldn't grasp the concept. -- Submitted By: (KaseyAkira) on March 22, 2010, 1:22 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
This series had way too much filler. It was ok enough at the beginning with Goku crossing Snake Way and Gohan training but after the saiyan saga the filler started to become completely pointless. It got much worse during the cell/buu sagas. I'm normally against editing but this is one of the few times I'll say just keep the filler out of the series, just leave these episodes out. -- Submitted By: (Acobjum) on December 18, 2009, 2:17 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
