Movie Series - Secret of NIMH, The

Based on the book "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM" by Robert C. O'Brien, The Secret of NIMH was a 1982 animated film produced by Aurora pictures and directed by Don Bluth. In the movie, Mrs. Frisby's name is changed to Mrs. Brisby to avoid copyright issues with the makers of the frisbee flying disc. The movie tells the story about Mrs. Brisby (voiced by Elizabeth Hartman), whose husband Johnathan Brisby was killed by the farmer's cat, Dragon. She visits an old mouse named Mr. Ages (voiced by Arthur Malet) to get medicine for her son Timothy, who is deathly ill with pneumonia. Timothy cannot go outside for three weeks. As Mrs. Brisby goes home, she meets a clumsy but kindly crow named Jeremy (voiced by Dom Deluise) who collects string and is searching for love. Since the farmer is about to plow his field early, she and her family must leave the area, but Timothy could die if he leaves the house. Desperate, Mrs. Brisby goes to see the Great Owl (voiced by John Carradine) to learn what she must do. When she tells the owl that she is the widow of Johnathan, he tells her to see the rats in the rosebush and ask for Nicodemus. There, she meets a colony of intelligent rats, including the friendly Captain of the Guard Justin (voiced by Peter Strauss), the power-hungry Jenner (voiced by Paul Shenar), and the wise leader of the rats Nicodemus (voiced by Derek Jacobi). When Mrs. Brisby asks why everyone knows her husband, Nicodemus tells her the story about NIMH and the rats. A direct-to-video sequel, The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue, was released in 1998. It takes place after the events of the first movie, and Timothy is taken to Thorn Valley to learn how to become a hero.

1 This scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Damn owl. Once I got over that it was pretty good. I've never seen the second film. I'm guessing it sucked just like Fivel Goes West did. -- Submitted By: (Jp) on February 21, 2012, 7:25 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
2 I saw the original movie back in 5th grade. Very good, and the book was great too. -- Submitted By: (ScottyB) on July 31, 2009, 4:52 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
