Bloom County was an American comic strip by Berkeley Breathed which ran from December 8, 1980 until August 6, 1989. It examined events in politics and culture through the viewpoint of a fanciful small town in Middle America, starring such characters as Opus, Milo Bloom, Steve Dallas and Bill the Cat

I didn't like what they did to Steve Dallas for an extended period after he was kidnapped by feminist aliens. They milked it for too long and made anything involving the character super lame. I know he changed back toward the very end after he got jilted, but it was too little too late. -- Submitted By: (ParkerTillman) on August 10, 2012, 10:28 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Bloom County, along with Calvin and Hobbes and the Far Side, represent the best comic strips of the Eighties. All three also represent creators who were smart enough to produce a remarkable body of work, and then quit while they were ahead. I miss all three, but I think that it's better to look back at a smaller body of stellar work, rather than a larger body of work that includes decline and stagnation. For those that might be interested, Bloom County is being reprinted in a comprehensive series of hardcover volumes. These include all of the strips (some not reprinted in previous collections), as well as historical notes and some interesting comments from Breathed himself. Three volumes have been issued so far, and two more are planned to cover the whole run of the strip. If you're a fan of Bloom County, get them -- you won't be disappointed. -- Submitted By: (Eugene) on December 1, 2010, 6:45 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Thanks, Pelirojo. Along with Calvin and Hobbes and many others, Bloom County is/was one of my favorite comic strips of all time. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on November 30, 2010, 12:44 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Not exactly, Robert, long-short of it is that Opus got spun off into his own less frequent comic strip then when Brethed decided to pull the plug altogether, he had Opus get 'reborn' as a drawing in a book- inside the last comic strip itself! Well, it beat how "For Better or For Worse" ended- yet didn't end. Anyway, although some of the characters I couldn't stand (e.g. the talking roaches), overall I liked the strip and followed it as long as I could in all its incarnations. -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on November 28, 2010, 5:55 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I think Breathed killed off Opus. Can anyone confirm this? -- Submitted By: (Robert) on November 28, 2010, 10:20 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
