TV Shows - Road to Avonlea

This Canadian-produced show created by Kevin Sullivan was somewhat based on the works of Lucy Maud Montgomery was first shown in the US on the Disney Channel between 1990-1996. Miss Montgomery's key character Anne Shirley was occasionally referred to but made no appearance on this show but the settings and some of her other characters were prominently featured. Instead, this intially focussed on the rich young orphan Sara Stanley (Sarah Polley) adjusting to life with her late mother's extended family (the Kings) in the early 1900's fictional, rural community of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Later, Sara became much less featured so the focus shifted to her former nemeses - the outwardly stern spinster schoolteacher Aunt Hetty and her sneaky young cousins Felicity and Felix King who became somewhat more sympathetic as the series wore on. By the end, the show definitely became more soapy than it had started out and it was somewhat apt that this show ended with the clouds of the First World War looming on the horizon. This was followed a few years later by a reunion movie set in Christmas,1914.
