Video Home System, better known by its abbreviation VHS, is a video tape recording standard developed during the 1970s. It was released to the public during the latter half of the decade. During the late part of the 1970s and the early 1980s it formed one-half of the VHS vs Betamax war, which it would eventually go on to win. VHS' properties include longer playing time, faster rewinding and fast-forwarding, and a less complex tape transport mechanism. The open standard used for VHS technology allowed mass production without licensing costs. VHS would eventually come out as the winning video tape format, surpassing other home tape formats by the 1990s.

There is nothing wrong with VHS, it's true that tracking can be a problem and tape heads have to be cleaned, but I think it served well as a visual medium for 20 good years before DVDs showed up. And to the one who submitted that the more superior Betamax format was replaced, the problem with Beta was that it did not have a long enough recording time for movies, only one hour compared to two hours on VHS. Introducing an SLP mode to double recording time didn't work in their favor because the same setting on VHS made their recording time even longer, and because of this convenience Beta was unable to compete. -- Submitted By: (jconifer7) on August 5, 2010, 10:57 am - (0 votes)

When DVD first came out, I didn't drop VHS like a hot potato. It took me a couple of years before deciding to give it a try. Even then, I'm not about to ditch my old VHS tapes - there are some things I've recorded that I doubt will ever get onto DVD (case in point being the 1984 National League playoffs between the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs). -- Submitted By: (BigAl) on August 5, 2010, 10:25 am - (0 votes)

So what that VHS was made obsolete by DVD (which itself is now going obsolete to Blu-Ray)? I still use VHS, as do many of the people in my family. I didn't record all those tapes over several years just to go, "Oh, DVD is here, time to get rid of them!" Forget that. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on August 4, 2010, 7:14 pm - (2 votes)

I still use my VCR because I am not ABOUT to replace every VHS tape I have on DVD. I have better things to spend money on! Besides, all those cool MTV videos, and documentaries I taped back in the late 80's and early 90's are irreplaceable. -- Submitted By: (Stephanie) on October 5, 2009, 4:04 pm - (1 votes)
