The Nobel Peace Prize (Swedish, Danish and Norwegian: Nobels fredspris) is one of five Nobel Prizes bequeathed by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel. According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."[1] Alfred Nobel's will stated that the prize should be awarded by a committee of five people elected by the Norwegian Parliament. Norway and Sweden were at that time still in union, and with Sweden responsible for all foreign policy, Nobel felt that the prize might be less subject to political corruption if awarded by Norway. The Peace Prize is presented annually in Oslo, in the presence of the king, on December 10 (the anniversary of Nobel's death), and is the only Nobel Prize not presented in Stockholm. "In Oslo, the Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee presents the Nobel Peace Prize in the presence of the King of Norway. Under the eyes of a watching world, the Nobel Laureate receives three things: a diploma, a medal and a document confirming the prize amount."[citation needed] The Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony is held at the Oslo City Hall, followed the next day by the Nobel Peace Prize Concert, which is broadcast to more than 450 million households in over 150 countries around the world. The concert has received worldwide fame and the participation of top celebrity hosts and performers.

As if the Nobel Peace Prize couldn't be any more of a farce, Ralph Steinman is the winner. What's so bad about this? He's dead...and the rules say the award can't be given to a dead person! http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/03/health/nobel-prize/index.html -- Submitted By: (Robert) on October 4, 2011, 7:40 pm - (0 votes)

In a perfect world, the only legitimate candidates for Nobel Peace Prizes would be actual humanitarians: people who devote their lives to helping others, in ways we can all measure, and without a desire for personal gain. In a perfect world, no politician would be eligible for such an award, simply by virtue of the fact that the pursuit of power - the psychosis which drives every politician, including those we admire - is the antithesis of selfless devotion to others. In a perfect world.......Ahh, but we live on Earth instead. -- Submitted By: (Soggy9000) on April 6, 2011, 2:10 am - (0 votes)

And now since Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, I daresay the Nobel Prize in and of itself has become irrelevant and meaningless. It's obvious which way their voting committee leans and they don't examine the reason(s) why certain people should get it. -- Submitted By: (BigAl) on June 28, 2010, 5:29 pm - (0 votes)

The fact that Mahatma Gandhi never won while people who really do not deserve peace prizes (terrorists, tyrants, etc.) have won them proves that the Nobel Peace Prize is a joke. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on February 27, 2010, 2:58 pm - (0 votes)

Come on people, what about Henry Kissinger? Didn't political satire become obsolete when he won the prize? According to Tom Leary.
Had to add that one. -- Submitted By: (johnnydough) on October 16, 2009, 7:07 pm - (0 votes)

My thinking is that Obama got the Peace Prize for not being George W. Bush. I like Obama, and I wouldn't be surprised if he ultimately does things that are prize-worthy. But awarding it to him now is absurd. To his credit, he seems to realize this. -- Submitted By: (Eugene) on October 13, 2009, 6:28 am - (0 votes)

I just saw that World Luminary Fidel Castro is applauding this award. Fidel, save me some cuban fish sandwiches when I get to Havana, I'll brins some US grade vinegar and Slaw so we can celebrate Obama's big win. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on October 11, 2009, 1:31 pm - (0 votes)

So the Nobel committee feels a man who made a movie about climate change (yet hypocritically lives in an energy-hungry home that uses more fossil fuel in a month than a normal house does in a year!) is more worthy of the Nobel prize than a woman who spent her life saving innocent children from imminent death in the Holocaust and was eventually caught, tortured, and nearly executed by the Nazis. Yeesh, remind me again how AMERICA's priorities are messed up because we care more about celebrities than world events? -- Submitted By: (Robert) on October 10, 2009, 11:08 am - (1 votes)

The Nobel Peace Prize has been a joke for years; I'm glad someone put it up here! Check out this info on this woman whom lost the Prize to Al Gore in 2008: http://www.snopes.com/politics/war/sendler.asp -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on October 9, 2009, 7:23 pm - (0 votes)

I actually think that the Nobel Peace prize boned the moment, as they started giving it to politicans for simply doing their job. How can one compare people who were risking their life (like Albert Schweitzer or Mother Theresa), their reputation or at least sacrified their time for doing something for the world with a politician who simply happens to sit at the nogation table at the right time? Especially when real fighters for freedom and peace like Ghandi get ignored?
The whole Nobel Peace Price was already a stinking cadaver of a fish. The whole Obama-Thing just shows it under a magnifying glas. Really, how about giving the price to every politican who goes to a desk and says: "I want peace!"? -- Submitted By: (Swanpride) on October 9, 2009, 3:31 pm - (0 votes)

President Obama today joined an elite group of U.S. presidents when he won the Nobel Peace Prize. Unlike his predecessors, Obama was chosen not for substantive accomplishments, but for inspiring "hope" at the start of his term. = JOKE! -- Submitted By: (Hikariu) on October 9, 2009, 2:28 pm - (0 votes)
