TV Shows - He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (2002)

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is a modern remake of the 1980s series of the same name, animated by Mike Young Productions, produced to coincide with Mattel's revival of the Masters of the Universe franchise eleven years after its previous attempt. It originally aired on the Cartoon Network from August 1, 2002 to January 10, 2004. Unlike the previous He-Man series, set on the futuristic planet of Primus, this version sought to return to the roots of the storyline and provide broader explorations never reached in the first series, including origins for each character, and some first time animated debuts of familiar toyline faces. The series also brought back several writers from the original series, such as Larry DiTillio. While the remake is mostly different from the original, it does have a few similarities. For example, Prince Adam transforms into He-Man when he says "By the power of Grayskull" followed by "I have the power!" (later episodes feature a chorus singing He-Man's name during the scene change). It also features "scene change" sequences, but only the one involving the Sword of Power was taken from the Filmation series; all the others were created just for this series, plus the sequences occur less frequently than on the previous series.

1 A friend got me a DVD collection of this updated series. In many ways it was better than the original: improved artwork, better storylines, much less cheesy. Characters were redesigned for the better (Ram-man was burly and tall instead of a midget with springy legs). Though I don't understand why Skeletor was barefoot this time around. Thanks, CN, for cancelling this so we could get crappy shows like Problem Solverz and Secret Mountain Fort Awesome instead. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on July 17, 2012, 3:12 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
2 Cartoon Network screwed this poor show over and now it looks like they're going to do the same to poor Thundercats. Why do the GOOD '80s revivals always die young? -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on July 7, 2012, 2:49 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote

5 I just finished watching all 39 episodes of this show- all I can say is wow, and to re-affirm my HATE for the "Cartoon" network for concelling this emmy award winning cartoon just as it was becoming one of the greatest all time action adventure cartoons of all time. The serial story telling, great writing, character deaths, truly evil enemies (Hordak, Skeletor, King Hsss) as well as the explanations and back stories of Skeletor, Snake Mountain, Grayskull etc made this a pleasure to watch. What a shame it was cut off right before it went to a great final season. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on October 11, 2009, 5:16 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
