TV Shows - Big X
Big X was a Japanese cartoon series based on a manga created by Osamu Tezuka, who is known for creating Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. It was based on actual experiments conducted by the Nazis to create secret weapons during the end of World War II. A scientist named Dr. Asagumo is asked by Hitler to collaborate with him on the research of their new weapon, "Big X". Concerned over the possible effects of this weapon's completion, Dr. Asagumo purposely delays the development, conspiring with his co-worker, the devious Dr. Engel. Just before the Allies defeat Germany, Dr. Asagumo hides the secret of Big X on a card in his son, Shigeru, then is shot dead by the German army. Twenty years later, as Shigeru is living in Tokyo, an organization claiming allegiance to the Nazis--which includes Dr. Engel's grandson Hans Engel--finds the card on Shigeru and completes the project. Big X is a drug which can expand the human body without limits. Shigeru's son Akira challenges the Nazi Alliance and Hans Engel, who plan to take over the world. Due to concerns that the show would encourage drug abuse in children, Akira transforms into Big X with an amulet as opposed to the drug. The series debuted in 1964.
