Celebrities - Isaac Hayes

Isaac Lee Hayes Jr. was a musician and actor. Born August 20, 1942, he in Covington, Tipton County, Tennessee, the second-born child of Isaac Hayes, Sr., and Eula Hayes. After their early deaths, he was raised by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Wade, Sr. The child of a poor family, he grew up picking cotton on farms around Covington. Hayes dropped out of high school, only to be encouraged later by his former high school teachers at Manassas High Schools to get his diploma, which he earned at the age of 21. He began singing at the age of five at his local church, and, soon after, he taught himself to play the piano, the Hammond organ, the flute, and the saxophone. Hayes began his recording career in the early 1960s. In 1995, Hayes became a Scientologist. On the cartoon series South Park, Hayes provided the voice of Chef, the school's cafeteria worker who would often break out into song to help the kids with their problems or situations. However, when South Park aired the episode "Trapped in the Closet", which was critical of Scientology, Isaac Hayes asked that Comedy Central release him from his contract. Hayes said "There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins." Matt Stone, of the creators of South Park along with Trey Parker, criticized Hayes because he "has no problem -- and he's cashed plenty of checks -- with our show making fun of Christians, Muslims, Mormons or Jews." he continued, "[We] never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin." Matt Stone and Trey Parker agreed to release Hayes from his contract by his request. Hayes' income was sharply reduced as a result of leaving South Park. On March 20, 2006, reports came in that Hayes had suffered a minor stroke in January. Hayes's spokeswoman Amy Harnell denied that Hayes had a stroke, but on October 26, 2006 Hayes himself confirmed that he had suffered a stroke. Two years later, Hayes was found unconscious in his home located just east of Memphis on August 10, 2008 as reported by the Shelby County, Tennessee Sheriff's Department. A Shelby County Sheriff's deputy and an ambulance from Rural Metro responded to his home after his wife found him on the floor near a still-running treadmill. Hayes was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, where he was pronounced dead at 2:08pm. Hayes was ten days from his 66th birthday. The cause of death was not immediately clear, though the area medical examiners later listed a recurrence of stroke as the cause of death. Hayes is buried in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee, next to friend and fellow Soul musician, Rufus Thomas.

Isaac Hayes Comments (You must Login to Comment)

1 I'm not really bothered on the fact that he was a Scientologist (and no, I do NOT support them), but rather on how he reacted with the South Park Co$ episode. He left the show because he thought it was offensive that they made fun of his religion, despite the fact that, like Trey Parker and Matt Stone said, they've made fun of other religions before, some more harsh than others, and Isaac Hayes was perfectly fine with it. -- Submitted By: (cartooner) on June 15, 2011, 4:09 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
2 Becoming a $cientologist is an instant-boning in my book. Hayes quitting South Park because of the episode that poked fun at $cientology was his final boning. -- Submitted By: (BigAl) on July 22, 2010, 8:15 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
3 The South Park ep "The Return of Chef" was a good indicator of how Matt and Trey feel about Isaac's leaving the show. In that episode, Chef joined the Super Adventure Club (an obvious reference to the CoS). The kids were not angry with chef, but with the club he joined because it brainwashed him. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on February 20, 2010, 3:03 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
4 Pity Isaac Hayes- he was a puppet of $cientology, his quitting of South park was disgraceful and I would call it a Bone the Fish Moment- however, I dont think it was his idea, I think he was coerced, and then he died shortly thereafter, it's more of a Bone in the large plate of $cientology, which is filled with bones. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on February 20, 2010, 2:12 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
