EarthBound, known in Japan as Mother, is a role-playing game series created by Shigesato Itoi for Nintendo. The series started in 1989 with the Japan only release of Mother (known unofficially in the US as Earthbound Zero) for the Famicom, and was then followed up by a sequel, released in the U.S. as EarthBound for the Super NES in 1995, and followed up again much later with the Japan only release of Mother 3 for the Game Boy Advance in 2006. Itoi stated in an interview that the name "Mother" was greatly influenced by the John Lennon song "Mother".

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Earthbound. It's just irritating that it's the only game of it's series that's been released in North America. And it's a sequel, a damn good sequel no less. But, still. It would have been nice if we had it's predecessor, Mother 1, for the NES and later on, Mother 3, for the GBA to go along with it.
Yet Nintendo just stubbornly never released those other games so we're forced to play the other ones illegally if we choose to do so. -- Submitted By: (Toasticus) on March 10, 2013, 5:30 pm - (0 votes)

I don't think it really has a reason to of BTF in the US. Most people had not heard of it before Game Cube's "Smash Brothers: Melee". That game sparked interest in EarthBound...or so I've read... -- Submitted By: (octogirlpretty) on October 18, 2010, 3:14 pm - (0 votes)
