Random Topics - Atheism
Atheism can be either the rejection of theism or the position that deities do not exist. In the broadest sense, it is the absence of belief in the existence of deities. The term atheism originated from the Greek "atheos", (meaning "without gods") and was applied with a negative connotation to those thought to reject the gods worshiped by the larger society. With the spread of freethought, skeptical inquiry, and subsequent increase in criticism of religion, application of the term narrowed in scope. The first individuals to identify themselves as "atheist" appeared in the 18th century. Today, about 2.3% of the world's population describes itself as atheist, while a further 11.9% is described as nontheist.

Like Soggy9000, I'm, more or less, an atheist, but I still don't like the atheists that bash anyone who is religious. While I often make fun of religious extremists, and hate politicians who use their religious beliefs as a political platform, I also hate people who throw a fit just because someone mentions "God" in public. -- Submitted By: (cartooner) on February 16, 2013, 5:12 pm - (0 votes)

Everyone can believe [or not believe] whatever they want. For me, it boils down to being more willing to risk saying 'oh well' if it turns out that there's nothing after this life than to risk having to say 'uh-oh!' if there IS an afterlife! Oh, and prayer has gotten me through a LOT so I don't see how something nonexistant could answer much less hear my prayers. -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on December 16, 2011, 12:16 pm - (0 votes)

Well, I'd say there are plenty of Republicans as well who aren't exactly living up to their religious convictions. Both sides are equally guilty. In all honesty, I'd like someone who was atheistic or agnostic to win a major office. Religion has way too much control in politics and it's rather annoying (and I'm Catholic btw). -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on December 15, 2011, 11:09 am - (3 votes)

Agreed. But then again, we know how truth and honesty hurts these politicians. -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on December 15, 2011, 5:05 am - (0 votes)

Did you ever notice how there are no Atheist politicians? Even the hard-left politicians like the Kennedys or Clintons all claim to be devout believers and yet vote in favor of all kinds of things that go in direct opposition to their alleged religion's teachings. If ever a politician just came out as an Atheist I would totally respect that instead of the usual "go to church once every 4 years around election time" routine. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on December 14, 2011, 4:48 pm - (1 votes)

Militant atheists would be wise to follow your "live-and-let-live" lead, Soggy9000. I too feel negatively about televangelists; they're exploiting religion to make big money. That's wrong, end of story. Saying they're religious is like saying people who make and sell bootleg Star Trek merchandise (like action figures painted in the wrong colors!) are die-hard Trekkies. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on April 5, 2011, 5:35 pm - (1 votes)

I like this Soggy9000 guy :-)
Seriously, why can't more atheists be like him? Besides, the existence of God and science is NOT mutually exclusive, no matter what the media wants you to believe. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on April 4, 2011, 6:03 pm - (1 votes)

I'm an atheist, more or less, and even I don't like militant, in-your-face atheists. If people want to live by a set of fables, why should I care? Why should I be angry at them? And why should I feel compelled to tell them they are wrong? Atheists who are so gung-ho to ridicule people who believe in deities are no better than obnoxious door-to-door religion peddlers or sleazy TV evangelists. They give live-and-let-live atheists like me a bad name. Bottom line: They are no more in touch with the Absolute Truth than a religious person is. (And neither am I. We ALL confuse what we believe with what we know.) -- Submitted By: (Soggy9000) on April 1, 2011, 5:46 am - (3 votes)

When I think of atheism I think of Bill Maher and other uber liberals like that who I want to punch in the face. Then again, I want to punch people who are uber religious in the face as well, so I guess it's one of the two extreme belief structures I can't stand. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on May 22, 2010, 3:50 pm - (4 votes)

I feel atheism is a fail because atheism is it all anger and negative, and anti-religion without giving a positive reason to be atheist or for life in general. -- Submitted By: (scatcatpdx) on May 14, 2010, 5:37 pm - (-1 votes)

It's been my experience that atheists are at least as intolerant as any practicioner of any religion has ever been. And they're just trying to brainwash you to their side just like every other religion does. As I said before, this is just another religion disguised as anti-religion. But they don't fool me! -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on May 3, 2010, 2:57 am - (1 votes)

I am accepting of whatever religion and denomination a person chooses to be, even most cults (if a person wants to be a Scientologist, fine). Where it gets less tolerable is when they become militant, violent or just plain disdainful about "other" people's faith.
Atheism is a prime example of this. You do not *have* to believe in God, Allah, karma etc but then you do not have to purely believe only what science or Earthly material tells you. There is that issue you try explaining aspects of religion to atheists and there is a chance they will not listen as they think they are right and nothing will do so otherwise. Then there is the faith aspect, where it is only seen as a "religion" thing but that is needed for true belief in anything.
I will not say that it boned the fish, as that is insensitive but the idea does need critiquing and close analysis. -- Submitted By: (johnnydough) on May 1, 2010, 2:10 am - (1 votes)

Robert, I think most of it, it's just the extreme side getting their voice out. I can guarantee you in most all people in religion, or in atheism, are in the moderate, and could care less, but its the extreme few who raise their voices loud enough to make one think "That is what they believe in". -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on February 23, 2010, 3:24 pm - (0 votes)

I once thought Christians were some of the most intolerant people out there, but all that changed when I saw how the atheists (by which, I mean the ones who were intolerant) were able to outdo them in terms of being intolerant. Example: If you learn more about Christopher Hitchens (author of the book God is not Great), man, what vitriol. I've met some atheists and agnostics who were nice and tolerated religious beliefs, some of which are good friends of mine. But, like all religions, there are those who go around flaunting their superiority against "peons" who don't subscribe to their beliefs. In conclusion, just be respectful of other people's beliefs (no matter who you do or don't worship) and you'll be treated with respect. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on February 23, 2010, 1:05 pm - (1 votes)

Some atheists fall into the same trap religious people fall into, and that is that they think their line of thinking trumps all other line of thinking. -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on February 23, 2010, 2:15 am - (0 votes)

I agree with the "Intolerance" reason-while most atheists are decent and respect the beliefs of others, there are those few that are completely insensitive to the beliefs of others and openly criticize those beliefs with no though at all. Search "Young Atheist on Wife Swap" on YouTube if you need an example. -- Submitted By: (ScottyB) on February 22, 2010, 7:19 pm - (2 votes)

I just hope you can practice what you preach and not paint all Christians with the same brush. I'll be watching...
MCS had it right the first time IMO. It's like atheism is it's own religion now, and all nonbelievers shall be punished. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on February 22, 2010, 12:21 pm - (3 votes)

Reading this again it comes across pretty bad. I guess I should have changed it to the majority of atheists I have met. I have met some decent atheists, just as I have met some decent (shudder) Republicans. -- Submitted By: (MCS) on February 22, 2010, 12:21 pm - (0 votes)

I don't care if a person is an atheist. That's their decision. But I will say they are some of the most intolerant people in existence. They are constantly bashing anyone who is a believer. Their paranoia is amazing. -- Submitted By: (MCS) on February 15, 2010, 1:59 pm - (2 votes)
