Though there's evidence of pre-Celtic habitation in the Thames River estuary region, the settlement was officially founded by the Romans in AD 43 as Londinium centered around the present day London Bridge where the river met the estuary and the Romans considered it a good spot to build a floating pontoon bridge to link the more 'civilized' southern region with the wilder north in an effort to colonize Britain. Although the Celtic warrior queen Boudica burned it a mere 17 years later, it soon rebounded into a port city and became the capital for entire Roman colony. After the collapse of the Roman empire, the city declined in prosperty but it rebounded after William the Conqueror set the stage for making London the capital city again. In the 19th century, London was the most populated city in the world with citizens from not only all parts of Great Britain and Ireland but every corner of the Empire settling here and contributing to the tapestry of the city.
Although it has suffered from Plagues, the Great Fire of 1666, Killer [carbon-monoxide] Fogs, incredibly polluted Thames (although this has been considerably cleaned up in recent decades), the Blitz, etc. it's hard not to be impressed by it. It's a tribute to its days as the capital of the British Empire (and now of the Commonwealth) that visitors from virtually any part of the world can find something of interest to fascinate them. So is the city's grandeur and history enough to keep it from ever boning or could the high cost of living, traffic problems and pollution cause it to bone?

Today is VE Day! I mention that because on the original day in 1945, the streets of London were unabashedly bursting with pride, joy and relief that their nation had defeated the NAZIs and the war in Europe was OVER! They'd seen their city become a battered, scarred and grim battlefield and had suffered many losses and deprivations via the Blitz and war itself but on THIS day, they were all able to CELEBRATE peace and victory! If I ever had the chance to travel back to any one time and place in the past, THIS would be it! Yeah, they were celebrating VE Day elsewhere, too, but here in the States we hadn't suffered the way the British had- and who could uninhibitedly celebrate ANYthing in Stalinist Moscow or Leningrad[ now again rightfully called St. Petersburg]? And, yet, the times I've been to London seeing all the tourist sights, I've wondered how many other tourists[and, for that matter, subjects] have any idea how CLOSE London had come to being obliterated and why VE Day was so vital? -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on May 8, 2011, 4:07 pm - (1 votes)
