Earth Day Comments (You must Login to Comment)

Most of the hippies I knew in college came from wealthy families. They spent 4 years doing nothing but smoking dope and protesting for ridiculous causes (Mumia Abu-Jamal was the cause du jour when I was in college; nowadays it is anti-Israel activism) and went home, shaved off their dreadlocks and had went to work for Daddy's company. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on May 23, 2012, 5:35 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I meant to say I sincerely hope those Einhorn wannabees did NOT take the concept far enough to harm any significant others! That's what I get for typing in a hurry! -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on January 28, 2012, 9:53 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Travaltron, I've seen a bit of the shadowside of hippies from back then to the current time so I understand where you're coming from here. I also like Arbor Day [and more places than ever could use healthy trees]! Anyway, I'm glad you haven't entirely shot down the concept of stewardship of our environment merely because of some bad seeds, kooks and hotheads who claimed to be speaking for every person wanting to preserve habitable space on our planet. P.S. I most sincerely hope that none of those Einhorn wannabees you met took that concept far enough to harm any of their significant others. Oh, yeah, the preceeding post was mine but somehow my moniker got clipped when I sent it in. -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on January 27, 2012, 8:22 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I'm actually pro-environment, but anti-Hippie. I went to college with a whole bunch of Ira Einhorn wannabes-- all entitled and arrogant with no common sense. So you can see why I have mixed feelings about Earth Day. I do like the concept, but not the people behind it. I'll stick with Arbor Day. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on January 25, 2012, 11:58 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Travaltron, I have to admit that I'd never heard of Ira Einhorn's association with the first Earth Day organizers. I've spent some time looking up primary sources since you mentioned this and, to the best of my comprehension, it seems he was the emcee of that first rally [and he HAD been a bigwig in Philadelphia counterculture circles prior to that]. It wouldn't be the first (or last) time an organization gravely erred by thinking a loudmouth would be beneficial in helping to jumpstart a cause. How could someone emcee an event without having any part in helping to organize it? Instead of saying Einhorn hadn't had anything to do with it, I think it would have been far better had they just lumped it and said [at his trial] 'Yeah, we made a horrible mistake in choosing him to emcee the thing and we're sorry he used that clout to help seduce a trusting girl whom he evidently would murder and stuff in a trunk!' It was hardly the first [or last time] an organization of any stripe has believed that having an obnoxious loudmouth at the front of the ranks would only have positive benefits [rarely if ever does this happen]. I am not an Earth Day supporter or organizer but I DO believe that we as individuals do need to consider what's best for the environment because we're on a planet with 7 billion other people and counting with ever decreasing resources, etc. I agree that some environmentalists have had rather skewed priorities, DolFan[e.g. the lightbulbs]. In addition to the BP Oil Spill Disaster nonaction, I'd also like to add something a little closer to home- the TVA Kingston Fossil Plant Coal Slurry Spill that ruined many acres and private homes- the environmental effects still are being felt. Yet, despite this disaster from the leaking coal ash pond, there's been no call to transfer slurry from other existing ponds near residential areas to safer containments even though this disaster proved this method extremely unsafe and doomed to failure without constant and proper human maintence. I guess the point I'm making is that regardless of the poor judgments/whacked priorities of some of the higher ups, I believe it's important for us to consider what we each can do to help keep as much of our planet as habitable for as long as possible. I mean, doing nothing and pretending there are no consequences of pollution makes as much sense as becoming cat hoarders. I think a better approach rather than considering making positive steps the equivilant of having 'freedoms' taken away would be to consider said steps a kind of game like scrap iron drives and victory gardens were to my parents' generation in World War Two with the idea of believing we were GAINING our freedom by contributing to a worthy goal. OK, I'm ready for the negative votes but I thought the above needed to be said.[and I most sincerely hope Einhorn rots in his prison for what he did to that poor girl regardless of anything else ]. -- Submitted By: () on January 24, 2012, 1:07 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
PREACH IT BIG AL!!! These so-called "environmentalists" are a bigger threat to our freedom than terrorists!!! And yet when the Gulf got ruined by Big Oil they sat back and did next to nothing, showing their TRUE colors!!! BTW did you know that we will be FORCED to buy nothing but hydrogen lightbulbs in a few years that are actually HAZARDOUS to dispose of properly? You literally won't be able to throw them away like normal trash because they'll leak dangerous chemicals into your house if you do!!! -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on January 19, 2012, 7:28 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Day one. Man has no more control over the climate than anything else on the planet, past or present. It's just another thinly-disguised attempt to make people feel awful about what they do and sneak through laws that take away freedoms. -- Submitted By: (BigAl) on January 19, 2012, 12:16 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
A holiday invented by hippies and liberals to make themselves feel all warm inside. Ugh... day one! -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on January 18, 2012, 10:47 am - (5 votes) - Login to Vote
One of the Wiki-sources listed even has a photo of him on stage emceeing the Philly event in 1970. His ex-girlfriend's rotting corpse was found by police is his closet in 1979 and since that time the Earth Day crowd has tried to rewrite him out of their history. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on January 17, 2012, 2:53 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
And that's why I can't take environmentalists seriously, because of their whole attitude of save the planet by having everyone die!!! Except us!!! Because we're saving the planet and stuff!!! That and the fact anyone who doesn't recycle or use those ridiculous twisty light bulbs is accused of singlehandedly making Earth uninhabitable while big business fills entire bodies of water with oil and get away with it somehow. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on January 16, 2012, 1:23 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
It's surprising they'd give such a monster the time of day, let alone allow him to MC. Then again, it's not that surprising; to the fanatical environmentalists, every dead human is a victory for Earth. Wikipedia's article on Einhorn says: "Although untrue, he claimed to have been instrumental in creating Earth Day in 1970, and claimed that during the first Earth Day event, he was on stage as master of ceremonies. Event organizers dispute his account in a sworn statement, including a rebuttal during testimony in Einhorn's murder trial." A visit to the talk page reveals that one contributor, MaggieL, was at the rally and saw him onstage. "Untrue", indeed. Try "cover up". -- Submitted By: (Robert) on January 14, 2012, 1:25 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Wow...I never knew that. It actually makes a twisted kind of sense though the way America's been declining since that early-mid 60s. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on January 10, 2012, 9:03 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Everybody likes to forget that convicted murder Ira Einhorn was instrumental in creating Earth Day. In fact, the Earth Day people are actively trying to cover this up. There's only one mention of him on the Wikipedia entry at the moment (sometimes there is NO mention of him). -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on January 8, 2012, 9:06 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
