Random Topics - Homework

Homework, or homework assignment, refers to tasks assigned to students by their teachers to be completed mostly outside of class, and derives its name from the fact that most students do the majority of such work at home. Common homework assignments may include a quantity or period of reading to be performed, writing or typing to be completed, problems to be solved, a school project to be built (such as a diorama or display), or other skills to be practiced.

I remember how some of my friends, who went to a different school, came home with a nice pile of big, heavy textbooks for homework. EVERY SINGLE DAY. No, it's not because they opted to goof off in class, and were forced to pay the price by working at home instead. As a result, what was supposed to be their break and free time was instead spent doing excessive amounts of homework. It needs to stop. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on October 2, 2013, 12:14 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I remembered when in my school, homework was work you slacked off from in school when you were given the assignment. These days, I get the feeling schools just give piles of homework all just for the sake of giving homework at all. Just so the teachers can feel like they're doing their jobs. -- Submitted By: (Infyrin) on September 29, 2013, 4:40 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Sometimes, I get the feeling every teacher thinks their subject(s) is/are the most important and heap on the homework to the point it's impossible to do a good job on anything. -- Submitted By: (BigAl) on October 21, 2010, 1:42 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
My sentiments exactly, DolFan. Assigning homework over the weekend is as far as it should go in my opinion, and even I think that's still a tad to much. Assigning homework over Christmas break, however........NO. -- Submitted By: (ScottyB) on October 18, 2010, 7:59 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
If I was 20-plus years younger and back in school I'd refuse to do any homework assigned over Christmas break. I'd love to hear the explanation as to why I failed a class despite making straight As every other time because I didn't do homework assigned at a time when I wasn't even in school. HA!!! -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on October 18, 2010, 6:21 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Homework is SUPPOSED to refresh you with what you learned earlier in the day, but it doesn't take a detective to understand that it does far more harm than good. First of all, the amount of homework assigned to students at ANY grade level is far too much. As if assigning hours of homework a night isn't enough, some teachers (and this is what pisses me of more than anything) assign homework over vacation time, with Christmas break being one example. I can just imagine a typical high school kid over Christmas break: "Come on, let's go to your grandma's house for dinner." "Nah, I have to stay here and DO MY HOMEWORK." I find homework to be a negative, detracting nuisance that hinders students rather than helping them like it was intended to do. If the schools passed a law that banned homework, I sure wouldn't miss it. Good riddance, and don't let the door hit you on the way out. -- Submitted By: (ScottyB) on October 14, 2010, 12:58 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I remember having to do term papers and book reports when I was in elementary school, but that was only because I was in gifted class. Regular elementary school kids back then didn't have that kind of workload. Now they do. And yet the state of education gets worse the more homework is assigned and the longer they make the school year. What I loved were the teachers (and professors) who clearly thought you didn't have anything to do for the rest of the day and thus had all the free time in the world to do THEIR personal mountain of assigned homework. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on July 28, 2010, 10:09 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I don't think any student has ever much liked getting homework. However, when it started getting to the point where even elementary school students started getting homework, it was getting out of hand. By homework, I don't mean having to read a chapter or two of a book by the next week or using flash cards to help learn math. I'm talking serious homework assignments the likes of which one might associate with High School or College. I think There's something wrong when it gets to the point where a 1st grader comes homes with hours of homework a night. -- Submitted By: (ExplodingConsole) on July 17, 2010, 11:54 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Being forced to do schoolwork at time when you're supposed to be relaxing sucks. It's so much fun to come home with a back-breakingly heavy bookbag because your teachers gave you an astronomical amount of homework, all of which require textbooks. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on July 16, 2010, 6:34 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
