TV Shows - Price Is Right, The

The Price Is Right is a U.S. television game show that is currently owned by the FremantleMedia subsidiary of the RTL Group. It was created by Bob Stewart for Goodson-Todman Productions in the United States in 1956, and was significantly revamped by them in 1972. Goodson-Todman, which later became Mark Goodson Productions, sold the rights to the show to what is now FremantleMedia in 1996. The Price Is Right tests contestants' knowledge of the prices of various products.

despite his stance on animal rights, he should've been invited anyways..he was the legacy of the show.. that's like having a Happy Days reunion and not inviting Henry Winkler OR Ron Howard -- Submitted By: (stryker73) on September 14, 2012, 5:44 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I DVRed the 40th anniversary special and finally got around to watching it the other night. While it was cool that they brought back some old contestants and showed some great old clips, I'm a little baffled that they didn't bring Bob Barker back to join in the festivities. Drew Carey's response when asked was "the thought didn't even cross our minds." Whoa, low blow there. I have a feeling the show has been trying to distance themselves from Barker for the past few years now. Maybe because of his past lawsuits, maybe because he truly was dictator to the staff, maybe because of his increasingly vocal activism on animal rights, I don't know, but something tells me that both CBS and the TPIR staff don't want him around. I get it that he's been off the show now for 5 years and it's time to turn the page. Drew Carey's doing a good job as host, the last links from the Barker era, Rich Fields and Fingers Greco, have left, and the show isn't what it was in 2007 when Barker hung up his microphone. Mike Richards has taken over and changed the show, in some ways good (updated games, prizes, set pieces, special weeks), in some ways bad (too many celebrities, too rushed, games that are too difficult to win), but he's made his mark and the show, all things considered, is updated while still retaining the nostalgia of TPIR that we know and love. All that said, Barker hosted for 35 years and is a huge reason its still on today. Even if it was just remarks, he should have had some role in the anniversary. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on September 13, 2012, 3:39 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Let me start off by saying that I like Drew Carey. Although he'll never come close to Barker's showmanship and smoothness, at least he seems like a nice guy(Barker was a sexist egomaniac). As far as the show goes, there are a few things that bug me about today's version. First of all, everyone is miked up including the models and contestants. It was better when Barker would chat with the models on occasion, I really don't want to hear useless banter during the games. Secondly, it's obvious the contestant's excitement is more forced recently. Lately it seems like everyone who comes on stage has his/her own dance. Finally, the show has become one big advertisement for CBS. I swear every other show is flanked by either A. Soap Opera actors, B. Country Music stars, C. Craig Ferguson. Oh, one more thing- I really wish the announcer wouldn't model prizes. It's not amusing. -- Submitted By: () on May 21, 2012, 3:13 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Well as I continued to watch, Snoop Dog was on to help raise funds for his youth football league that he helps run, whatever was won, TPIR matched, so that isn't all that bad. -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on January 3, 2012, 7:39 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
You can thank Mike Richards for that change. Not only that, they get the worst celebrities possible, like Snoop Dogg and Jenny McCarthy. Ugh. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on January 2, 2012, 4:28 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Ok, I haven't watched much Price is Right (due to me being a third shifter), but we got Snoop Dogg on the show with Drew Carey (as of the January 2nd episode). What the hell?!? -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on January 2, 2012, 10:09 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Yeah. Pretty much grew up watching all the gameshow reruns (especially Pyramid and Press Your Luck) that would air on USA Network during the afternoons in the early-mid 90's, and watched a ton of GSN before they got enamored into this newer crap they put on their channel. I would also go on the GSN forums a ton a while back, so thats how I learned a bunch about the ins and outs of game shows. -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on August 24, 2011, 9:35 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
PYLrulz, I can tell you are a huge game show fan (by your screen name), which is cool, as am I. I know Price is Right has always been kind of a loud carnival and not known for having the brightest contestants, so I don't expect geniuses or everyone to win every game. It just seems like this season has a lower winning percentage than usual. Maybe I'm wrong, just have caught a few weeks of reruns and noticed a lot less winners than usual. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on August 17, 2011, 8:34 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Maybe it might be making the games just a little bit harder, but most game shows usually look for people who would go nuts on camera, and not think rationally, or very clearly over someone who can keep a calm, cool head. Unless it is Jeopardy, do you really want to put on a few cool headed people on your show? No. 1, it's boring for the viewers, especially for certain game shows, and 2, it's a good way for the game show to lose a few extra bucks, as someone will use their head, be more prone to guess the correct price/answer/letter/whatever the object of the game is. -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on August 17, 2011, 6:21 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I've been catching the summer reruns, so it's given me a chance to see how the show is post-Rich Fields. George Gray's okay (MUCH better than most of the other sub announcers), but I don't notice him (or any of the other announcers) doing much "improvising" in their announcing. Seems like they are doing the same thing Rich Fields did, the only difference is Rich Fields is a trained professional and these other guys for the most part aren't. The only real "improv" things I notice George Gray doing is he makes a sad face of the contestants overbid and sometimes he models the prizes. Other than that, what does he do that Rich Fields didn't do? I don't get it. Also, Drew looks completely different since his weight loss. Good for him and his health. He still isn't Bob Barker, but he does a good job as host. Like I said in an earlier post, he is much more Pat Sajak than Bob Barker. He knows it's a silly game show, he doesn't take it seriously, he's sarcastic, he's self-deprecating, and he doesn't build up suspense or showmanship really at all. That kind of bugs me in that I like Bob's false reveals and excitement, but I'm glad Drew's got his own style. The specials are pretty cool too and add variety. Also, it seems that the contestants aren't winning nearly as much as usual. I wonder if the games are purposely harder or the contestants are just that much dumber. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on August 17, 2011, 12:10 am - (4 votes) - Login to Vote
Well TPIR has found a replacement for Rich Fields in the form of George Gray. I gotta say, he ain't no Johnny Olson, but he sure is better than the other guys they were thinking about -- Submitted By: (tvfan) on May 14, 2011, 10:49 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Drew Carey on this show, Wayne Brady on Let's Make A Deal, Jimmy Carr on Distraction... The list goes on. Am I the only one who sees they're giving bad comedians game shows to keep them from bothering us with their not comedy? -- Submitted By: (TheCeej) on April 20, 2011, 8:57 pm - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
I doubt Drew Carey will ever fill Bob Barker's shoes, but he at least puts forth an effort. -- Submitted By: (BigAl) on October 19, 2010, 11:24 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Rich Fields has been fired by the show to bring in an improv comic as an announcer to move the show into more of a variety show format. That makes me a bit nervous, especially when there are rumors of more celebrity guests and house bands potentially joining the show in 2010. If this happens, say goodbye to TPIR and hello to "The Drew Carey Comedy Hour." -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on August 2, 2010, 4:30 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
I don't think it ever boned, but Drew Carey has gotten better and better every show. I think TPIR fans should feel safe that with Carey hosting the show, it should be on for many years to come. -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on May 3, 2010, 10:55 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
The Price is Right is, was and always will be Bob Barker's show. However, Bob Barker himself jumped probably around 1993, when Mark Goodson passed away. It was rumored that Barker only listened to two people: his wife Dorothy Jo (who passed away in 1981) and his boss Mark Goodson. When the last of those two people disappeared, he was completely in control and turned into almost a dictator. Soon came the Dian Parkinson affair, the firing of Holly Hallstrom, the firings of Janice and Kathleen, the firing of Paul Alter, the fallout with Rod Roddy and more. Eventually, Bob got too old. He couldn't hear as well, was more irritable, and had less patience. He left at the right time. I wasn't crazy when I heard Drew Carey got the job (at least it wasn't Rosie, thank God!), but he's getting better and better. The show, which was starting to get stale, has gotten fresh again with new prizes, new set pieces, a more laid-back attitude, special episodes and more. Drew doesn't imitate Bob, he brings his own spin to the show. Think Pat Sajak with a touch of Drew's own Whose Line Is It Anyways? persona and you've got his hosting style. TPIR will always be Bob's show, but Drew is doing a fine job keeping the show strong. It might have boned back. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on May 3, 2010, 2:39 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I'm normally one to believe in that if someone leaves a main role, its usually time to hang the show up. Drew Carey has been a more than capable replacement for Bob Barker, and I only believe he will only get better -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on February 10, 2010, 5:41 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Why is this show still on the air? After Barker left they should have packed up the set. -- Submitted By: (fletch000) on February 9, 2010, 11:05 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
There is no way...NO WAY...anybody could hold a candle to Bob Barker! No matter who the subsequent host would have been, it would be a terrible idea for that person to try to imitate Bob. Barker stepped down at the right time. Nobody could possibly fill those shoes, but Drew is developing a nice, non-Bob niche. Sure he was stiff as a board at first, but who wouldn't be? I'll never forget the time somebody gave an exact bid on the Showcase Showdown, I believe only the second time that has ever happened, and Drew sold it with all the enthusiasm of someone in need of a root canal. But since then, he has become more relaxed. The set has undergone a gradual series of tweaks. They do fun things, such as dress up for Halloween (Drew as the "Yodel Guy" was hilarious) and salute the military. I believe the show is in good hands, and may never bone! -- Submitted By: (Nature_Boy) on December 8, 2009, 7:56 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
The problem is Drew has about the opposite style of Bob Barker. Barker was all about showmanship, Drew is basically "Showmanship is passe and for skinny people, I'm just going to bumble around and be charmingly self-deprecating". -- Submitted By: (doctor_awesome) on November 10, 2009, 9:18 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
