TV Shows - Challenge of the GoBots
Challenge of the GoBots is an American animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, based on the Gobots toy-line released from Tonka. It was the primary competition for The Transformers series; both shows were about two factions of alien robots that transformed into vehicles.
The GoBots originally debuted in animated form as a five-part miniseries, which aired in syndication from October 29 - November 2, 1984. A regular series followed the next year, premiering on September 16, 1985. The series was later rerun on the USA Cartoon Express.

A lot of young people put down the '80s Transformers cartoon. They call it "dated" or "campy". I always tell them to check out "Challenge of the GoBots" to put it in perspective. Here's the exact same premise, except these guys did it all wrong. Bad writing, lame character design, poor continuity, cheap Taiwanese animation, etc. The contrast really helps show how much harder the Transformers people worked to turn out the superior TV show. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on August 2, 2012, 8:49 pm - (0 votes)

When I was young, I knew it was just a copy of Tranformers. Looking back, it's surprising how many similarities there were (not including the premise of good and evil robots which could turn into vehicles). -- Submitted By: (Robert) on March 30, 2010, 3:10 pm - (0 votes)

Not a bad cartoon, but The Transformers did it so much better. -- Submitted By: (AndyC) on May 3, 2009, 2:37 pm - (0 votes)
