TV Shows - Royal Family, The
The Royal Family is a situation comedy starring Redd Foxx and Della Reese. It was created and produced by Eddie Murphy (as part of a development deal with CBS), who had previously worked with Redd Foxx and Della Reese on the 1989 film Harlem Nights. It ran for one season on CBS from 1991-1992.
The series was supposed to be a comeback vehicle for Foxx (best known for Sanford and Son), but on October 11, 1991, he died during filming---- of a heart attack---- after completing only seven episodes. Following Redd Foxx's sudden death, the producers ultimately decided to continue the show. Special, touching promotions were run by CBS (run in memory of Foxx) stating "Like any family, The Royal Family will go on." The working title for The Royal Family (ironic---considering the ultimate circumstances with Redd Foxx's fatal heart attack) was Chest Pains.

Irony of bitter ironies was that at first the cast and crew actually thought Mr. Foxx was doing his Sanford impression when he was actually having his fatal heart attack. Then they later tried to salvage the mess by bringing in 227's Jackee in as, first Victoria's (Della Reese's) much younger sister- then ,after they decided it was too cumbersome to have to have the characters explain the relationship, they made Jackee's character Victoria's prodigal DAUGHTER (previously the daughter who had moved back into her parents' house after her divorce with her children that had triggered the original premise, had been Al and Victoria's only child). They needn't have bothered because the TV audience decided the whole thing was too cumbersome to bother with after Mr. Foxx's death. -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on August 26, 2009, 3:56 pm - (0 votes)
