Celebrities - Charles Lane

Charles Lane was born on January 26, 1905 and was an American character actor seen in many movies and TV shows, and at the time of his death may have been the oldest living professional American actor. Lane appeared in many Frank Capra films, including You Can't Take It With You, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Arsenic and Old Lace and It's a Wonderful Life. He was a favored supporting actor of Lucille Ball, who often used him as a no-nonsense authority figure and comedic foe of her scatterbrained TV character on her TV series I Love Lucy, The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour and The Lucy Show. Lane has also appeared in episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies, Get Smart, The Andy Griffith Show, Mr. Ed, The Twilight Zone, Dennis the Menace, Bewitched, Green Acres, Soap, Little House on the Prairie, Nanny and the Professor, The Real McCoys. On the occasion of his 100th birthday in 2005 he was honored at the TV Land awards show. Lane died on July 9, 2007 at the age of 102.

1 Another good nominee would be William Shallert. -- Submitted By: (ParkerTillman) on July 9, 2012, 2:04 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
2 Joe Bag of Donuts, He's actually a fairly good nominee. Mr. Lane was a genius at playing mean, but funny skinflints. Oh, and he seemed to have found a warped kind of fountain of youth in that he looked like he was sixty for about sixty years until his death at 102! -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on April 5, 2012, 9:32 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
3 In addition to the negative BTF patron saint, I feel we should have a more positive icon to honor. The category could be the person who never seemed to have a regular role, but they managed to show up everywhere anyway. If you don't know who Charles Lane is just Google him and you'll recognize him. If you've ever seen sitcoms from the 50's, 60's, and 70's and some pretty major movies you'll recognize him and probably even hear his voice. He was always the old cranky guy who hated Christmas and just about everything else. It was neat back in 2005 when TV Land gave him a special award when he turned 100. He died a couple of years later but of course just like all of our sitcom legends, he lives on every time you watch one of the many episodes he appeared in. -- Submitted By: (JoeBagODonuts) on April 1, 2012, 12:13 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
