TV Shows - Arsenio Hall Show, The

The Arsenio Hall Show was an Emmy Award winning talk show that aired late weeknights in syndication from January 2, 1989 to May 27, 1994, and starred comedian/actor Arsenio Hall. The show was known for the audience's chant of "Woof! Woof! Woof!" while pumping their fists in a circular motion. One of the show's recurrent gags was affixing a humorous label to a specific section of the audience at stage left of the band, called the "dogpound." This section had arguably the least interesting view of Arsenio's interview space as it was largely obscured by the size of Michael Wolff's band set. The labeling was a staple of Arsenio's opening monologue and almost always began with the phrase "People who..." In one variation of the gag, Arsenio designated this section as "People who are currently in a Witness Protection Plan," at which point the camera panned over to that section to reveal a digitally pixillated view of the audience that made it impossible to identify them. Although not an actual "gag," Burton Richardson's long intro of the show's host (in which he would hold the "O" in "Arsenio" for as long as ten seconds right before Arsenio came out onto the stage, then finally announce "HALL!" all in the same breath) became a staple of the show. In the intro to the final episode, Richardson held out his one-breath introduction for exactly twenty seconds, one of the few times he had done so. Arsenio would ponder certain thoughts, referring to them as "things that make you go hmmmm..." This running gag inspired a 1990 hit song by C+C Music Factory by that very title. Presidential candidate Bill Clinton was a guest on the show in June 1992, playing "Heartbreak Hotel" on the saxophone (causing Arsenio to quip, "It's nice to see a Democrat blow something besides the election"). The appearance is often considered an important moment in Clinton's political career, helping build his popularity among minority and young voters; Clinton went on to win the election in November 1992.

Like everyone has said already, this was the hottest show on television in 1989. Who can forget the dogpound or his catchphrase, "Let's get busy". I wasn't permitted to watch this one because it came on after my bedtime. I remember teachers and teenagers talking about it in the hallway. I mainly saw it during the summertime or saw ads for it during commercial breaks. It first almost boned when Arsenio lost weight. He was still funny shortly after it happened, but the show was never the same. It became more apparent that he was a terrible interviewer during the third season. I love how he put Vanilla Ice in the hot seat. I thank him for that. Also. I was grateful for it because of the SNL Carsenio sketches. The last iconic moment of this show was when Bill wore the Ray Bans and played that saxophone. The show became filler after that. -- Submitted By: (tvwatcher7) on September 13, 2014, 7:51 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Because studio execs are professional Koolaid drinkers who cannot see beyond their gigantic egos. -- Submitted By: (Friedrich_Feuerstein) on June 13, 2014, 4:55 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Aaaand, canceled. Again. I guess my comment a year ago about Arsenio crashing and burning was correct. If I can see this, why can't a studio exec? -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on May 30, 2014, 6:20 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
So did anyone watched Arse Hall's new show? Because I couldn't be Arsed. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on September 11, 2013, 8:28 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Sucked from day 1. Never understood why people thought him or his show was funny, plus MTV insisted on having him guest host their video awards show two years in a row. -- Submitted By: (John63btf) on June 14, 2013, 6:09 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
He got hipper guests than Carson and scored a large young audience because of it. There was nothing especially funny or intelligent about Arsenio himself, and after Leno stole his guests away from him this became obvious. I think people have nostalgia goggles on with regards to this show. It was never really that good, we were just to young to know better. When Arsenio returns this fall I think people will realize this and he will crash and burn. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on June 12, 2013, 1:11 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
this is the dogpound, these are the people who are watching this show and CONVINCED its funny. that was about 40 people. the rest of the world knew otherwise and we avoided it. -- Submitted By: (VeritechRyan) on October 19, 2010, 11:07 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Reason why this boned from day 1: Arsenio making cracks like "Yes, there's nothing wrong with your television, I am black" as if his show was being televised in the 50s or 60s. -- Submitted By: (darturo) on February 11, 2010, 12:51 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
O.K., you guys or girls or whatever, that voted sucked from day 1 please comment on why you feel that way. Thank you. -- Submitted By: (fletch000) on February 11, 2010, 12:41 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Although Arsenio Hall was not one of the best interviewers on the tele, his show was the hottest thing on late night. I loved the show. He consistently got the hottest and hippest(sic) stars and kept the party going. -- Submitted By: (fletch000) on February 7, 2010, 8:37 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
