Newhart! Comments (You must Login to Comment)

"The Bob Newhart Show" was classic, an ensemble of realistic characters that meshed well, I still enjoy it. But "Newhart" was a trainwreck from the first episode. No characters, just overblown caricatures - the yuppie couple were just irritating; the two town councilmen were imbeciles; George Utley was inconsistently played, in some episodes he can fix anything, in others it's surprising he can walk and breathe at the same time; and I wonder how much the producers had to pay the live audiences to laugh uproariously at the 500000th repetition of "Hi, I'm Larry, this is my brother Darryl, this is my other brother Darryl". The only positive to this show was it had one of the best finales in television history. -- Submitted By: (jgf) on January 30, 2015, 7:51 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Actually, as good as it became, it was close to jumping (or boning, whichever one prefers) in the first season with the annoying and unfunny Kirk (Steven Kampmann), whose lying schtick got old very fast. Used to go out of my way to watch it in first-run episodes and everything has already been said about the finale (although at the time, a TV critic wrote that the last "Cheers" show was better; not in my opinion). -- Submitted By: (GregEichelberger) on July 22, 2014, 5:26 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Green Acres of the 80's. Why does there have to be a horny old slut, like Kathy Kinney to bugger things up all the time? Sheesh! We have all heard the stupid skank jokes before, and before.... -- Submitted By: (ommy) on June 8, 2013, 4:12 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I don't think it's possible for a show to have a better finale than this one. "Dallas" fumbled the dream concept, "Newhart" used it brilliantly. -- Submitted By: (HailHail) on April 2, 2012, 3:59 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
True, kingbk. Ironic that The Ending itself has become a TV Legend resulting in the entire 8-year-run of the show itself becoming a mere footnote to it- even Larry, Darryl+Darryl are somewhat forgotten compared to The Ending! This is spite of neither show being rerun that much these days. -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on August 28, 2011, 6:09 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
This show was good, not great. A bit too silly for my tastes and it screams 80s when you watch the reruns. I enjoyed the Bob Newhart show of the 70s much more. I think he was smart to tie the series finale with his original show, as it was the more superior one and the one his fans will more associate with his career than this one. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on August 27, 2011, 4:56 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
Peter Scolari, Larry,Darryl,Darryl. Bob knew the importance of good supporting casts. -- Submitted By: (jonkaplanseaver) on May 9, 2011, 12:28 am - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
Great show. No one brings the deadpan like Bob and he had a great supporting cast of zany small-towners. Came close to jumping with L,D&D getting a lot of airtime, but got through it. Fantastic series finale! -- Submitted By: (CrazyPierre) on July 3, 2010, 7:01 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Yes Best Finale Ever - the most creative ending to any TV series in history. Brilliant!! -- Submitted By: (BobNYC) on April 17, 2010, 1:47 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
I loved the Bob Newhart Show, this one, not so much. Hell not at all. -- Submitted By: (fletch000) on February 8, 2010, 10:19 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
TOTALLY agree about the ending, BrewMaster- and we can thank Ginny(Mrs. Bob) Newhart for thinking of it! Of course how Bob, the late Miss Pleshette and the rest of the "Newhart!" crew managed to pull it off without the studio or home audiences being tipped off in advance was nothing short of military strategy at its best! -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on July 22, 2009, 7:25 am - (2 votes) - Login to Vote

Never jumped, but it came close when it became the Stephanie & Michael show. She was cute, but annoying! -- Submitted By: (syzygy) on June 22, 2009, 6:16 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
What is it with producers and Bob Newhart? Old bald not funny guy and every time you look up, he has a new show with a hot wife. -- Submitted By: (Bobsuruncle) on June 9, 2009, 2:27 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
NEVER jumped! It did get a little too much what with Larry, Daryl & Daryl, but still much better than the dreck shown today! -- Submitted By: (syzygy) on April 27, 2009, 4:12 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
