ZOOM was an American educational television show, created almost entirely by children, which aired on PBS from January 3, 1972 to June 24, 2005. Produced by WGBH-TV in Boston.

I watched it when it was first on for the whole First Incarnation and, even as a kid, I thought it had WAY too much singing. Also, in the beginning, the kids showed their real personalities a lot more but by the end of the original incarnation, they were acting on-camera even during non-skit/singing times as though they were all as chummy as "The Brady Bunch". I remember when they wrapped it up (the final time?), one kid actually differed from the others and admitted that he was friends with the CREW rather than any of the other cast members. I was amazed they let that candor slip by- but, of course, the whole cast ended that show with them (you guessed it!) singing 'Everyone's Gotta Have Friends La-La-La-La-La'. Still, the show was fun when it was fun- and I liked how they showed other kids' original crafts that you could get mailed instructions for via sending the show a postcard (yep, I STILL remember the original P.O. Box and Zip Codes but I'll spare the current holder of that post office box from getting needless cards by not mentioning it here). I also liked many of the interviews with other real kids (e.g. I've often wondered what became of one kid whose family was shown in the process of leaving their Illinois(?)farm that had gotten flooded out by the Mississippi [early 1970's] and that clip ended with them all sadly driving away from the now-ruined farm and farmhouse that had been in their family for over 100 years- to a very sad harmonica rendition of 'Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme'). Also, I liked the segment 'Tracy Talks' in which one of the Originals voiced her POV about current events. I don't remember anything Tracy talked about but, as a kid, I liked seeing another kid who was actually keeping up with the surrounding world and had opinions! Lastly, after one kid-produced segment which showed vegetables bemoaning being tossed into the garbage disposal uneaten, my father actually started to insist I eat my vegetables from that point on. I wasn't happy when that happened but now I'm somewhat grateful that I learned to like eating healthy foods besides apple sauce via that skit! Kids today need to have skits like that to seek to eat healthy foods instead of chain junk if our nation is to prevent 1/3 of the kids born after 2000 to get diagnosed with diabetes (one current forecast) and it should also be noted that 60 percent of all diabetics lose their eyesight [yes, SIXTY PERCENT!].
