TV Shows - SpongeBob SquarePants
SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated television series and media franchise. It is currently Nickelodeon's, and is among Nicktoons Network's most-watched shows. In 2007, TIME magazine named it one of the greatest television shows of all time. Although its original network is Nickelodeon, SpongeBob is now broadcast around the world. It was created by artist, animator and former marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg, and is produced through his production company, United Plankton Pictures, Inc. It is the second longest-running Nicktoon, next to the Rugrats.

Then again, this is Nickelodeon we are talking about. Take something that has become super-popular, hijack it, and milk it. Sometimes, it's near instantaneous (see Ren & Stimpy), sometimes, it might take a few years (Rugrats). It's a stupid fun show to watch when nothing else is on, but yeah, the earlier stuff is MUCH easier to watch. -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on April 28, 2013, 12:51 am - (0 votes)

The "After the movie" reason mentions about how "Derek Drymon was forced to keep it going," but I think Paul Tibbitt should get just as much blame (if not more), since he became the showrunner after the the movie, and, if I'm not mistaken, became executive producer in 2007. -- Submitted By: (cartooner) on April 26, 2013, 1:08 am - (0 votes)

I sat through a few newer episodes...they're really out of ideas. The plots are either lame (Gary meowing nonstop throughout an episode for snail treats), predictable (I was able to guess what would happen 9 out of 10 times. No joke!), or recycled from past episodes (Squid Baby was just Goo Goo Gas where only Squidward turned into a baby). In regards to a previous post mentioning Simpsons parallels, there are plenty: the stupid character who gets stupider with each passing season. The stupid character's progressive stupidity so overly forced as to be ridiculous. All the characters getting stupider. Digital ink and paint making the animation go from fluid to "militarily rigid" (thanks to Zombie Simpsons for that quote!). Recognizing themselves (one fish made a reference to "My Leg!" being a running gag). Acting out of character. Becoming parodies of themselves. Trying too hard to follow running gags (especially Mr. Krabs being obsessed with money). Voices becoming more and more high-pitched and whiny. Plots which have no purpose but to keep the show going. I think it's safe to call this new series "Zombie Spongebob". -- Submitted By: () on October 30, 2012, 11:05 pm - (0 votes)

I was reading a post on a "Hit or Miss" thread on an internet forum that pretty much sums up what I think.

Episodes after the movie: With a few exceptions, mainly miss" -- Submitted By: (cartooner) on March 10, 2011, 11:41 am - (3 votes)

SpongeBob ran out of material towards the end of season three with awful episodes such as "I Had an Accident". Season four was brutal and so was season five. Season six was beyond words. Almost every episode in it focused on SB's strange behavior towards Squidward, characters getting their skin ripped off, Mr. Krabs obsessing over money, or a mentally insane SB and an even stupider Patrick torturing Squidward, getting off scot free in the end. Boned at season four, bar none. -- Submitted By: (EpicWinner) on March 9, 2011, 4:50 am - (1 votes)

When the characters started to degenerate into their present forms is when the show boned. It turned into a kids' show rather than something everybody could appreciate. Incidentally, what's with all the new Plankton episodes? Do the writers just think the concept's so good that they require every second episode to revolve around it? -- Submitted By: (ElBlocko) on May 5, 2010, 7:17 am - (1 votes)

I can perfectly pinpoint it. The episode "Best Day Ever" After that, Spongebob became this overly excited sponge and his voice got more high and whiny. It got really annoying to watch. -- Submitted By: (Rape_Factory) on April 25, 2010, 1:24 am - (0 votes)

I want to make a comment about the merchandising reason/comments...RIGHT ON. Currently, at Burger King, there is YET ANOTHER Spongebob-based toyline. At the grocery store he's on all sorts of products, even a box of Cream of Wheat. Seriously, Cream of Wheat? He's now less a cartoon character and more a merchandising icon. What happened? -- Submitted By: (Robert) on April 13, 2010, 2:27 pm - (1 votes)

Allow me to rephrase myself here. This show didn't bone/jump/nuke after the movie, IT SUCKED FROM DAY ONE!!! I already stated my piece about the uber-merchandising, the unnessecary celebrity guest-star plague, and how all the characters are uber-stereotyped, but now we get even MORE reasons. First off, the show OUTRAN RUGRATS!!! Seriously, go to Wikipedia and count how many cartoon got offed in this time (as well as how many merely in his wake)!!! Also, the show isn't really as original as you think. Where have we seen the whole dynamic duo plotline before? NUMEROUS TIMES IN ALMOST RAPID SUCCESSION? Finally, are you honestly telling me that a show with that sort of ploy, about a SPONGE, which you can get for 99 cents, is better than ANY AND ALL OTHER CARTOONS OUT THERE??? YOU CANNOT BE FREAKING SERIOUS. Yes, I am finished posting on here. -- Submitted By: (Idontlikefails) on February 15, 2010, 10:17 pm - (0 votes)

Spongebob JTS somewhere around the latter half of season 3. Before that, the show was charming and funny. Then episodes like "The Sponge Who Could Fly", "The Camping Episode", and "Krabby Land" happened, which were just awful. They were obnoxious, annoying, and NOT charming or funny. Seasons 4 and up were just plain garbage. The show went from cute, charming, and funny to loud, obnoxious, hyperactive, and not funny. -- Submitted By: (TheFNG) on November 15, 2009, 12:15 pm - (0 votes)

Spongebob was among the funniest shows of all time for me. Then around the middle of the third season, everything about it started to suck! Honestly, I used to like the show, but now, it's just the kind of show that doesn't deserve it's popularity (seriously, you can make a Spongebob ANYTHING nowadays) and should've been canceled by now, but somehow still airs. Ever since the movie, the show itself has become a mere excuse for Nickelodeon to be able to air the same show every other hour. Spongebob is now a complete idiot (and is sounding worse than Fred of YouTube fame), Patrick's head is now completely EMPTY, Krabs now wouldn't throw out a penny TO SAVE HIS LIFE, and all other characters (Sandy, Squidward, etc.) have almost completely had their personalities enforced LIKE IT WAS THE LAW (basically following suit). Also, the show has fallen into the same "guest star" gimmick that plagues both Nick AND Disney to this day. Bottom line, if I wanted to watch any show similar to this, i'd watch Chowder or Flapjack. -- Submitted By: (Idontlikefails) on October 3, 2009, 2:10 pm - (0 votes)

I, personally, have been a huge SpongeBob fan ever since I saw the episode "Chocolate with Nuts". However, I do admit that the latest episodes have been packed with SpongeBob screaming and becoming less intelligent, Patrick becoming even MORE stupid, and Mr. Krabs becoming stingier as time goes on. The pre-movie episodes are also better overall than the post-movie episodes. It just hasn't been the same since Stephen Hillenburg left. -- Submitted By: (ScottyB) on August 1, 2009, 2:58 pm - (2 votes)

This used to be a great show that everyone could enjoy they should have quit after the movie, then they just had to bring it back after Stephen Hillenburg left they took everything that was a stereotype about Spongebob and the rest and overly exaggerated them, examples are Spongebob went from a loveable, creative, responsible, intelligent, character to a hyperactive, ,effeminate, immature, obsessive compulsive, screaming, idiot, and Patrick went from good natured fool to retarded asshole. -- Submitted By: (comic_guy87) on July 17, 2009, 1:19 am - (1 votes)

I agree, it was after the movie. The show started off good, and fresh, I heard somewhere they planned to end the show with the movie (to go out with a bang), But the Execs at Nick milked the cash cow dry, and continued. The animation wasn't as good, the jokes and writing, etc. Sponge and Pat are now stupid, Krabs is more greedy and a jerk, Squidward is the victim/abuse taker, Sandy is almost non-existant... -- Submitted By: (Ken) on May 10, 2009, 12:07 am - (0 votes)
